The Oosterpoortwijk is one of the first large-scale expansions built outside of the former fortified city limits of Groningen. The largest portion was built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. As the name implies, it lies east, and actually southeast, of the city center. There are no tall buildings in the district. There are many flat buildings with maximally three levesl and also many ‘schippershuisjes’, houses with a living space on the ground floor and a finished attic. Properties are both privately-owned and rented. A third of the housing is owned by housing corporations. On the main roads (Meeuwerderweg and Oosterweg) are retail shops, restaurants and cafes.
