How to Register with Room.nl
ROOM is the national registration platform for student rooms and an initiative of social student housing providers. Together, they rent out about 50,000 affordable student rooms in more than 10 cities. In this blog, you can find out how ROOM works and how to register.
Housing through ROOM in Groningen
In Groningen, Lefier and SSH rents rooms in large student complexes – think Esdoornlaan, Goeman Borgesiuslaan and Winschoterdiep – but also rooms in city buildings.

With your ROOM registration, you can apply for Lefiers’s and SSH’s offers. Keep in mind that you will not immediately find a room in Groningen. Therefore, look into other options via friends, such as subletting.
How ROOM works
If you want to move into a room now, soon or someday, registering with ROOM is a very good idea. It is a one-off registration that costs €35 and will soon provide you with a choice of over 50,000 affordable rooms. You can register from the age of 16 and you’ll immediately build registration time.
- Several student housing providers are affiliated with ROOM. When you register, you’ve signed up for all participants at once.
- Registering costs a one-time fee of € 35,–. You can pay via iDeal/Wero or by credit card.
- The participating student housing providers all have their own websites with rental offers. With ROOM registration, you can log in to all these websites.
ROOM rules in Groningen

Viewing based on registration time
‘Viewing based on registration time’ means that anyone can apply for an accommodation. The candidates with the most registration time are invited to view the living space. This is done either individually or in a group. The candidate with the most registration time has the first choice to rent the accommodation.
Introduction night (‘hospiteren’)
In ‘introduction night / vote-in (without considering registration time)’, anyone can apply for a room. The current residents select some candidates to view the room and then choose a new roommate from among them. This rule only applies with Lefier.
