Welcome to Groningen

Groningen is famous for being a student-friendly city. As of 2019, it has the third largest international student population in the Netherlands after Maastricht and Amsterdam. Groningen has two main universities: University of Groningen (UG) and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze UAS).

Dutch universities don’t have a tradition for on-campus housing. So, finding a place to live is your own responsibility. Most students live in (student) residences which are situated some distance from campus. Efficient public transport makes it easy to travel between your residence, campus and the city centre. And of course, students travel also very easily by bike!

Find your room
You should start to look for accommodation preferably 3 to 5 months before you arrive in Groningen, as it can be very difficult to find accommodation right before the semester begins. At the homepage, you can find a ‘room finder’ to find your accommodation. Be aware that the room finder only lists rooms which are owned by homeowners; At home in Groningen does not rent any rooms. Good luck with your search!
